Jake's Cape Breton birdhouse

For the first time after 3-4 years, the swallows decided to build their nest in Jake's (nephew) homemade birdhouse! As you can see, the babies are waiting eagerly for their frequent feeding. The birdhouse is safely set on the west side of our shed in the back yard.

  1. I did the same as your son & looked up details on how to build a birdhouse. I use cedar for mine. They will last for years. Depending on the size you want, you can build economically using cedar fence pickets. Redwood is also a good choice.

I've discovered that for birdhouses, different species are very particular about the size of the entry hole. Its a good thing to keep in mind if you are attracting a particular kind of bird.
